A call to South African Freelancers!

Hey there friends of the Fish!

Feish here reaching out to you with something a little different this week. We’re usually full of chatter around the things we’ve experienced and the ways we’ve been forced to grow and in turn learn but now, we’re looking to experience things with you! The shoal is growing and we want to know if you’ll be a part of it?

Sav and I recently found ourselves in a whirlpool of work ranging from the smaller brands we manage continuously to a heavy hitting agency that had outsourced us as Fisheye and wanted their pound of flesh (we love them but phew, did we panic!) While we absolutely love to be so busy and so eagerly on-boarded by big and busy clients, for two creatives juggling a number of balls all at once, we were truly terrified to drop one and run our brand’s reputation through the mud. What we ended up with was having to bow out of some pieces of work that we’d have never let go had we had the support to onboard other freelancers to help us move like Dory and just keep swimming.

Working as a stand alone freelancer in a time before Fisheye existed was a wonderfully chaotic time for me but there was no comfort in the flow. Some weeks I’d be so busy I’d hardly sleep or eat and other weeks I could watch a season of New Girl in a day… What was the humongous variable between these two states of being you might ask: I was an island!

The most challenging obstacle that freelancers incur is facing work in solitude. There is no support structure, nobody to reach out to for a new pair of eyes on an artwork, hell… nobody to even vent to when that one specific client hasn’t paid you or is nit picking at a 2mm line spacing difference! Most of all, there is no promise of a constant stream of work. We believe we could play a part in providing a little more community amongst a group of co-existing islands!

“So Feish, what exactly do you propose?” Well... we, at Fisheye, are growing the shoal! We’re hoping to reach out, connect, meet with, sift through and build an army from the huge group of unbelievable creatives we know are out there making their way through this space. We want to drive a better interconnectivity between us all so that when we have extra work on our hands we don't have to send a client that’s bought into Fisheye away but rather just offer them the chance to swim with another Fish.

Somebody recently posed the really powerful question to us of whether we are two freelancers working under a company name or two creatives looking to run and build a company. We’re small, we’re each playing the part of five different job descriptions and we’re learning on the fly but we want to house a space where we can bring others into our work and we can rely on those creatives to run with the name and reputation of our brand.

So… bottom line. We want to know from you what it is you do. Where your strengths lie, what experience you have and you've really valued and mostly whether you can see yourself collaborating with us rather than working for us! We value attitude and enthusiasm more than we appreciate years and years of experience and we want to see that epic portfolio you’ve got not so we can judge your capabilities but so we can see where you thrive and where your work speaks to your strengths.

Essentially, get in touch! Send us an email, tell us your story and share your portfolio but for goodness sake DM us on IG if you have a creative page because we love to know you're on our socials, watching what weirdness we’re putting out there and we want to keep our Fish-eye on your work too. We’ll take such pleasure in chatting through some ideas as we move into 2021 hopefully with you in the Fisheye artillery.

Until we chat, thanks for keeping an eye on us friends. Big and bold things in 2021 for a small fish in a big sea but we are growing. Join us!
