Hi friends of the fisheye, how is it going?
Super good to have your eyes lay on our blog. This is a space for us to speak our minds and for you to get a better idea of the woman who are the eyes of the fish.
So, the first questions of the day. How to start your own business as a young blood female creative in SA??
Let’s first break this down. Young Blood? Young blood is a creative that has just started to peek its head into the big creative industry. Look we aren’t too new. Call it 2 years. We are saying our first words and walking on our own so, so far so good? We still have many days of flexing our muscles ahead of us. Part 2, we are two female creatives. Why mention this? Well, as much as the world is becoming a much rounder place, we know sometimes it is a little harder for us women to break in our shoes. In saying this, it is all about owning the space and stepping into it with your head high as you take on the many different creatives you will encounter. This wraps around nicely to ‘How do you start a business well, let’s see.
FIND A FRIEND
That’s what we did. Find somebody whose creativity compliments yours. For Sav and Feish we nailed the yin/yang. Sav loves to be front of the house, art directing, coming up with ideas, and working as a project manager and organizer. Feish is the doer, graphic designer, and badass who creates magic behind the screen. So as you can tell, what Sav loves and is killer at, are the things Feish isn’t as hot about and vice versa. This is a good place to start.
MAKE SURE YOU ARE IN IT.
Starting something new is HARD. Especially because a lot of the time you are both going to be learning as you go along. It is after hours, long phone calls, money from the savings. These are all the things you need a lot of commitment and all in from everyone involved. It is much easier to jump into the cold water and stay in when your partner is by your side, right? Because when they get out it’s hard to not go with them.
USE YOUR CONNECTIONS.
Something you learn quickly in the game is that connections are everything. Use them wisely. Don’t burn any bridges, be open to all opportunities and constantly keep linking ideas and people. Help them, help you. It goes such a long way.
TAKE WHAT YOU CAN GET, at first.
It is hard when you are starting out. We are still very much there too. All I am saying is that to start floating on your own, sometimes you need to take the job for a little less, commit to a client even if they don’t totally inspire you. In saying this, it doesn’t last forever and it shouldn’t! Set your price list, know your worth. Don’t compromise on the creative, but if you can see that by helping out a client now, will help you out later. Do it. Build a relationship if you believe it is worth nurturing.
That is all I have for now, as I said we are just learning to walk. So I hope that in the few months and years ahead I will have even greater lessons and tips to share.
See ya friends of the fisheye.
Thanks for keeping an eye on us.
