The productivity in taking a nap

Hiya Friends of the fish.

How is everyone doing?

It’s that time of year again, the one where you start seeing the countdown days until Christmas memes and you look at your calendar and have an internal panic about the fact that this year is almost over and it's going faster than you can keep up.

Phew, all know this feeling.

Right about now is also, usually when the weight of the work year starts to feel heavy.

As if we have been running in a marathon, 10 km from the finish line, we are so close but our legs are tired and we’d way prefer to be putting them up on a beach chair than hurdling them furiously towards the black and white checked tape that marks the “okay you can stop now” point.

As I write all of this, it brings up one large red flag. A flag myself and many of my millennial friends talk about a lot and its toxic overworking culture. Are we really supposed to spend the rest of our lives running in a relentless race? Working over hours, responding to emails as soon as they land in our mailbox to prove our productivity is at an all-time high.

Keeping all our eyes on our colleagues to make sure we look as busy and useful as they do? We send emails off at 10 pm as our personal and work lives dissolve into one,

This keeps going, but then what? Something's got to give.

So here at Fisheye, we propose something: take the plunge and take a nap.

The New York Times released an article titled “Take Naps at Work. Apologize to No One” The article references Dr. Mednick, a sleep researcher and the author of “Take a Nap! Change Your Life,” stating that daytime napping can have many of the benefits of overnight sleep” Dr. Mednick suggests a 20 - 60 minute nap which will help refresh the mind and increase memorization. This time zone is said to be just enough before you enter stage 2, the rapid eye movement (R.E.M.) sleep.

Ultimately, we aren't afraid of hard work. There is a lot of positivity and productivity in putting our love and passion into something we care about. Sometimes it takes a few extra hours in the day. That is okay! What isn't okay is looking up from your desk and seeing your days running away from you. We do not live to work, we work to live. Keep that in the back of your mind, and remember to take naps. Looking after yourself means that you can be the best version of YOU and in return, this will make you a better CEO, boss, manager, or employee.

Thanks for keeping an eye on us,

and thanks for keeping your eyes closed too sometimes. You deserve it!
